The Archdiocese of Blantyre has appointed Reverend Father Dr. George Buleya as its new Vicar General, effective July 20, 2025.

The announcement was made by Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa in a letter dated July 2, following extensive consultations with the College of Consultors and senior clergy within the Archdiocese. Fr. Buleya succeeds Father Boniface Tamani in this key leadership role.

“With powers vested in me by Canon Law, section 475 subsection 1, I confer upon you this esteemed status based on the qualifications you possess, which tally with the stipulations of canon law on the qualifications for a vicar general,” reads the letter.

Archbishop Msusa further stated that Fr. Buleya will assist in the administration of the Archdiocese by exercising the Archbishop’s ordinary executive authority over the entire territory.

Father Buleya brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (now the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops) and as Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi from 2015 to 2023.

His appointment is seen as a blend of pastoral leadership and academic expertise, reinforcing the Archdiocese’s mission of service and spiritual guidance.

The Archdiocese expressed confidence in his leadership as it continues its pastoral and administrative mission in southern Malawi.
