President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is today, Tuesday, 2nd July 2025, scheduled to preside over the official opening of the National Cancer Centre at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
According to a statement signed by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, the ceremony is expected to start at 8:00 AM.
The National Cancer Centre is a landmark project in Malawi’s healthcare sector and is the first-ever specialized cancer treatment facility in the country. The centre features four bunkers for radiotherapy and two bunkers for brachytherapy, making it a game-changer in the treatment of cancer within Malawi’s borders.
The opening of the centre signals the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and reducing the financial burden on the state. For years, Malawi has been spending over US$2 million (approximately K3.4 billion) annually to refer cancer patients abroad for treatment.
Health experts and stakeholders have hailed the project as a critical step towards improving access to cancer diagnosis, care, and treatment for Malawians.
More updates on the official proceedings and President Chakwera’s speech are expected later today.
