A 27-year-old man, identified as Tiwonge Phiri from Kakumbi in Senior Chief Mkumbira’s area, has died after drowning in Lake Malawi at the Nkhata Bay Central Business District yesterday.
According to Nkhata Bay Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Devoter Mithi, Phiri had been drinking at a lakeside bar before deciding to swim in the lake to cool off. Unfortunately, he did not resurface.
“About an hour later, members of the public noticed his body floating in the water and immediately alerted police,” said Mithi.
Police officers, accompanied by medical personnel from Nkhata Bay District Hospital, responded to the scene. Phiri was pronounced dead on arrival.
A postmortem conducted at the hospital confirmed that Phiri died due to suffocation caused by drowning.
Police have since advised the public to avoid swimming in the lake while under the influence of alcohol.
