Two people have been hospitalized at Chikwawa District Hospital following a fire outbreak that destroyed part of Dyeratu Market in the early hours of July 8, 2025.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told reporters that the cause of the fire remains unknown, though the Presscane security team was instrumental in bringing the blaze under control before it could spread further.
Francis Mazinga, head of Citizen Watch, has commended Presscane for its swift response, saying their action helped save lives and protect traders’ property.
“We are grateful for the quick intervention by Presscane. Their efforts prevented what could have been a much worse disaster,” said Mazinga.
Authorities say an assessment to determine the value of the damaged goods is currently underway, while efforts to confirm the condition of the injured victims from hospital officials are still in progress.
The incident has left several traders in shock, with calls for improved market safety measures and fire preparedness gaining traction.
