Authorities at Machinga District Hospital have confirmed the mysterious disappearance of two GeneXpert machines, which are vital for testing tuberculosis (TB) and HIV, with an estimated value between K50 million and K60 million.
Hospital spokesperson Wongani Nyirenda verified the incident, stating that the machines went missing early this morning and that a joint investigation with police is currently underway to trace the equipment and hold those responsible accountable.
“The absence of these machines will heavily impact diagnostic services at the facility,” Nyirenda said. “They are essential for delivering bulk results quickly and efficiently.”
As of now, police have not issued an official statement regarding the theft.
Meanwhile, Belinda Somanje Chimombo, chairperson of civil society organizations in the district, has condemned the incident, calling it an act of sabotage against public health services. She has urged authorities and stakeholders to intervene and ensure that those involved face the full force of the law.
The loss of the machines is expected to significantly delay TB and HIV testing services in the district, raising concerns among patients and healthcare workers alike.
