Police in Mwanza have arrested 36-year-old Stelia Chikweni on charges of smuggling a 14-year-old girl to Mozambique, where she was forced to work as a domestic servant.

According to police spokesperson Hope Kasakula, Chikweni deceived the girl’s parents by claiming she would help provide the girl with higher education in Mozambique. Instead, the girl was taken to a place called Angolia in Mozambique, where she was used as a domestic worker.

The girl eventually managed to flee and returned to Malawi on foot. Upon learning of her escape and return, the girl’s mother reported the matter to the police, leading to Chikweni’s arrest.

Chikweni, who comes from Chitambalala Village in the Govati Highland area of Mwanza District, has been appearing in court in connection with the case.
