Police in Lilongwe have arrested Robert Bamusi, aged 30, on suspicion of murdering his wife by beating her with a hoe handle following a domestic dispute.

According to Kanengo Police Station spokesperson Gresham Ngwira, the incident stems from a disagreement that began in May this year, when Bamusi gave his wife, Catherine Katengeza, aged 24, K140,000 to start a small business. However, weeks passed without any sign of the business materializing, which reportedly caused tension between the couple.

The two had been married for five years and have one child together.

Ngwira explained that on June 30, Bamusi returned home from work only to find that his wife had left their home, taking all household belongings and leaving their child alone. Bamusi then followed her to Mtandire, where she was staying at her sister’s house, and convinced her to return home so they could resolve their issues.

However, once back at their house, another heated argument broke out. In the heat of the moment, Bamusi allegedly locked the door, grabbed a hoe handle, and assaulted his wife, ultimately causing her death.

Robert Bamusi hails from Chilombo Village, under Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe.
