Minister of Trade Vitumbiko Mumba, who is also a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member, has strongly denied allegations that he sponsored political thugs to disrupt the recently held staged primary elections in Mzimba Central Constituency, accusinG MCP officials of orchestrating the violence themselves.

In a Facebook post, Mumba claimed that those pointing fingers at him were, in fact, the true sponsors of the violent incidents. He referenced videos and images circulating online, including one that appears on The Nation Online, suggesting that evidence exists to exonerate him and implicate others.

“One misguided lady councillor even recorded herself saying, ‘vigabenga vya Mumba vyasuzga kuno’ and later is heard instructing her people, ‘don’t throw stones yet, time is not yet,’” Mumba stated, questioning how someone supposedly fleeing danger could calmly make such recordings.

Mumba further alleged that the councillor’s recent appointment to the Board of the Blantyre Water Board was a reward for her loyalty to certain political masters.

He also recalled a similar incident during demonstrations by Mzuzu vendors, where panga-wielding thugs appeared to be inciting chaos. Mumba claims that the vendors later held a press conference, clearing his name and exposing senior MCP figures behind the disruptions.

“This isn’t the first time they’ve tried to tarnish my image,” he added. “But the truth always comes out.”

The developments in Mzimba Central and the broader accusations have sparked renewed debate over political violence and manipulation in party primaries, with growing calls for transparency and accountability from all parties involved.

Mumba, is answering case before the High Court in Mzuzu for an inter-party hearing regarding the disputed primary elections in Mzimba Central Constituency.

During the primaries, the party declared Presidential Advisor on Rural Transformation, Adamson Mkandawire, as the winner with 262 votes, while Mumba only secured five votes.

Earlier, on May 16, the High Court had granted Mumba an ex-parte order compelling MCP to hold a fresh primary election in the area, but the order was later discharged due to failure to fully disclose facts.

The matter is currently being presided over by High Court Judge Justus Kishindo.
