Driver Arrested After Teacher Dies in Hit-and-Run Incident in Dowa

Police in Mponela, Dowa District have arrested a 32 years old driver, Mike Sonyezani, after his vehicle hit to death a primary school teacher.

Mponela Police Public Relations Officer, Macpatson Msadala, has identified the deceased as Emmanuel Lupiya, 31, from Mkhuki Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima District.

“The driver found people playing football match at a ground, he passed through the ground while the game was being played, this did not amuse Lupiya and his friend who ordered the Lorry to stop. He then clung onto the vehicle to talk to the driver but when the driver saw this, he started moving at a high speed, sending Lupiya sprawling on the ground,” said Msadala.

The driver did not stop after the accident.

Postmortem conducted revealed that Lupiya sustained severe head injuries leading to his death.
