Political and human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa has accused Malawi’s security forces of betrayal following a violent attack on him during a peaceful protest in Lilongwe.

The incident took place during nationwide demonstrations led by Namiwa’s group, Citizens for Credible Elections (CFCE), which is pushing for electoral reforms ahead of the September 16 general elections.

Namiwa claims police and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officers stood by as machete-wielding attackers assaulted him.
During an interview aired last night, he described the ordeal as life-threatening.

“It was a near-death experience,” he said, his voice shaking with anger. “Their failure to act despite seeing me in distress makes me question their professionalism and commitment to protecting citizens.”

Both the Malawi Police Service and MDF say they are investigating the incident.
