Paramilitary officers from various prisons across Malawi have issued a strong warning of an impending nationwide strike, citing long-standing neglect and poor working conditions.

The disgruntled officers, speaking anonymously, say they have endured over five years without any promotions, despite their unwavering service under difficult circumstances.

“We are tired of being ignored while police officers are regularly promoted. Most of us still live in cramped, one-room houses provided by the government, which are unfit for human habitation,” said one officer who declined to be named for fear of victimisation.

The officers say the government appears to prioritize prisoners’ welfare over that of prison staff, despite the critical role they play in maintaining national security and rehabilitation efforts.

Responding to the grievances, Prison Services spokesperson Steven Meke requested time to investigate and address the concerns. However, the matter has already gained traction on social media, influencer Kondwani Kwachamba Ngwira expressing solidarity with the prison officers.

“I fully support Malawi prison officers. Their work is essential, yet they are treated as if they don’t matter no housing, no incentives, no promotions, and no motivation. Listen to them before they lay down their tools,” said Ngwira.

He added that the housing structures given to officers resemble shrines, calling for urgent attention to their living and working conditions.

As tensions rise, the public and human rights bodies are urging the government to urgently engage with the prison service to avoid a strike that could cripple correctional operations nationwide.
