Police have arrested two men in connection with the gruesome murder of Shanaz Yusuf, a woman from Chirimba Township whose death on June 29, 2025, shocked the nation and sparked widespread public outrage and heated social media debates.

The suspects, identified as Charles Petrol, 25, and Alex Mangwaya, 27, reportedly confessed to the murder during police interrogations and have demonstrated to law enforcement officers how they lured, killed, and dumped Yusuf’s body in the Chipironi River near Dorvic Hotel in Chirimba.

Their arrest was made over the weekend following an intelligence-led operation spearheaded by cybercrime detectives, who utilized digital forensic techniques to track down the suspects.

The brutal murder of Yusuf ignited a social media storm, with some users drawing unverified religious connections to the crime claims which authorities say are misleading and harmful.

In response, police have cautioned the public against making inflammatory or unfounded remarks about ongoing investigations, stressing that such behavior can incite hatred against innocent individuals or groups.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face murder charges.

Charles Petrol hails from Mkosa Village, under Traditional Authority Chapananga in Chikwawa District, while Alex Mangwaya is from Mbeya Village, T/A Nankumba in Mangochi.
