The Nkhunga Magistrate’s Court in Nkhotakota has sentenced Robert Budala, aged 48, to eight years in prison with hard labour after he was convicted of defiling an 11-year-old boy.
State Prosecutor Micheas Chatsira told the court that the incident happened on July 10, 2025, when Budala lured the boy who was returning from playing to a maize mill where Budala works.
After committing the act, Budala attempted to silence the boy by offering him K2,000, but the boy reported the matter to local community security members, which led to Budala’s arrest.
In court, Prosecutor Chatsira asked for a stiff sentence, stating that the offence had deeply affected the victim’s mental and emotional well-being.
Although Budala pleaded guilty and asked for leniency claiming it was his first offence First Grade Magistrate Kingsley Buleya sided with the prosecution and handed down an eight-year custodial sentence with hard labour, stressing the seriousness of the crime.
