Police in Karonga have arrested a 38-year-old man, Patrick Viyuyi, for transporting 1,120 litres of liquid petroleum without a valid permit.
The arrest occurred yesterday at the Karonga roundabout, where Viyuyi’s white Toyota Sienta, registration number NE 3971, was found improperly parked. A routine traffic stop by officers led to the discovery of 56 jerricans of fuel hidden inside the vehicle.
According to Karonga Police spokesperson Margret Msiska, Viyuyi failed to produce the necessary documentation authorizing the transportation of the fuel. As a result, he was arrested on the spot, and the fuel was seized by authorities.
He is expected to be charged with transporting liquid petroleum without a permit. This is contrary to Section 17(d), as read with Section 42 of the Liquid Fuels and Gas (Production and Supply) Act.
The suspect comes from Chakwera Village, Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District.
