The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it will comply with a High Court ruling that nullified the recent primary-election in Mzimba District and ordered a fresh vote.

The court, sitting in Mzuzu, ruled that the primary-election held on May 11, 2025, was marred by irregularities and should be re-run. The legal challenge was brought by Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, who argued that the electoral process had not been free and fair.

The initial outcome had favored Adamson Kuseri Mkandawire, who currently serves as the presidential advisor on rural development.

MCP Deputy Spokesperson Ken Msonda said the party respects the rule of law and will ensure that the re-run is conducted in a transparent and impartial manner.

“We are a party that upholds democratic values. We accept the court’s decision and will take all necessary steps to comply,” Msonda said.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to announce the new date for the primary-election.
