The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has launched an investigation into the recent violent attack on members of the Citizens for Credible Elections (CCE), who were reportedly assaulted by panga-wielding thugs during a public demonstration.
Speaking to the media, Peter Chisi, MHRC’s Director of Political and Civil Rights, said the Commission decided to initiate its own inquiry after receiving reports of serious violence, theft, and property damage related to the incident.
“We are committed to uncovering the truth behind this attack, including identifying the roles of individuals and institutions that may have contributed to or failed to prevent the violence,” said Chisi.
The Commission emphasized that the investigation will be independent and aimed at promoting accountability and the protection of civil rights in Malawi.
Robert Mkwezalamba, Chairperson of the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), has welcomed the MHRC’s move.
“We believe this investigation will help restore public trust and encourage citizens to participate in democratic processes without fear of intimidation or violence,” said Mkwezalamba.
The MHRC has urged the public and victims to cooperate with investigators and provide any information that may assist in uncovering the full scope of the events.
