Police: Road Accident in Balaka Claims Four Lives

Police in Liwonde, Machinga District, have confirmed that three women and a man have died in a road accident that occurred yesterday in Chilanga, Balaka District. The accident happened when a vehicle carrying 46 people collided with another vehicle.
According to Liwonde Deputy Police Spokesperson Lizinet Kathumba, the victims were from Mangochi and were on their way to a funeral in Phalombe District. They were travelling in a lorry (registration number PE 10759), driven by Frank Daban, 39, from Mangochi.
The lorry collided with a goods vehicle (registration number CP 6719), driven by Benson Tembenu from Dedza. Kathumba stated that the lorry was speeding and the driver lost control, causing it to collide with the other vehicle at the junction of the Mangochi-bound road.
Fifteen people sustained serious injuries in the crash, while an unknown number of others suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Machinga General Hospital.
Police have identified the deceased as Wyson Masanjala, Frossy Chataika, Belita Kaliwo, and an unidentified woman.
