The Mzuzu Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced Sydney Mnthali, 30, to 30 months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for theft by servant.
The court heard through the State Prosecutor Sergeant Chimwemwe banda that Mnthali, who was employed as a cashier at Premier Bet Malawi, Katawa Branch, misappropriated K2,090,000.00 which was entrusted to him by his employer.
Investigations conducted by Detectives of Mzuzu Police Station revealed that the accused used the stolen money for betting at the same branch, where he unfortunately lost the entire amount.
Following his arrest and full interrogation, Mnthali admitted to the offence, and the case proceeded to full trial.
During sentencing, the court considered that the offence involved abuse of trust and personal gain.
Though Mnthali pleaded for leniency as a first offender, the prosecution argued for a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.
Presiding over the case, Second Grade Magistrate Chiku Kachipande concurred with the state’s submission and sentenced the accused to 30 months IHL as a corrective and deterrent measure.
Sydney Mnthali hails from Malemia Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District.
