In a rare polyandrous ceremony, a woman in Shillai village, Himachal Pradesh, India married two brothers under a local tradition known as Jodidara.
The three-day wedding, held from July 12, 2025, in Sirmaur district’s Trans-Giri area, featured folk songs, dances, and traditional rituals.
Sunita Chauhan, the bride, married Pradeep and Kapil Negi in a mutually agreed union without external pressure.
The wedding, attended by hundreds, sparked viral interest on social media and reignited discussion on the declining tribal practice.
Polyandry is legally recognised under Himachal Pradesh’s revenue laws and is traditionally practiced by the Hatti community, now a Scheduled Tribe.
In nearby Badhana village, five such weddings have occurred in the past six years.
The custom is rooted in preserving undivided family land and maintaining unity among siblings in remote farming communities.
Despite growing education and economic change, the tradition continues in some areas, often celebrated discreetly.
Rituals like “Seenj” and offerings to the Kul Devta mark the spiritual aspects of this enduring cultural practice.
