Father and Son Die After Falling Into Pit Used for Dumping Dead Chickens in Thyolo

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of a father and his son in Thyolo District after they fell into a pit dug by a poultry company for disposing of dead chickens.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Edward Kabango has identified the deceased as Chembekezo Nkhata, 43, and his 16-year-old son Phunziro Nkhata, both from Chinkono Village in Traditional Authority Chimaliro.

Kabango said the two used a rope to descend into the pit, but unfortunately, the rope snapped causing both of them to fall.

“The bodies were discovered early in the morning, and a postmortem at Chisoka Health Centre revealed that they died due to severe head injuries,” he said.

Police have warned the public against entering such dangerous areas to avoid similar tragedies.
