A 31-year-old man is battling for his life at Chama District Hospital in Zambia’s Eastern Province after he was attacked by an elephant on Monday, July 22, 2025.

The victim, Chibeza Botha of Old Game Compound in Chief Kambombo’s area, was ambushed by the wild animal around 12:00 PM while traveling with his sister-in-law to collect maize from a nearby village.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident, stating that the elephant first chased Botha’s sister-in-law, who managed to escape unharmed.

“The elephant then turned to Botha, who couldn’t run away in time and was seriously injured during the attack,” said Mweemba.

Botha is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at Chama District Hospital.

Authorities have since warned communities in the area to exercise caution when traveling near wildlife zones.
