A 23-year-old man from Chizimba Village in Chama District, Eastern Province, has died after being attacked by an elephant while guarding his crops.
The victim, Daison Mkandawire, was in his garden with his elder brother around 5:00 AM on Sunday when the incident occurred. He sustained severe injuries, including a broken left leg and arm, as well as a deep cut to the abdomen that left his intestines exposed.
Mkandawire was being rushed to Chama District Hospital but died on the way, according to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, who confirmed the incident to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).
The tragic event highlights the growing human-wildlife conflict in the region, where elephants often raid farms in search of food, placing the lives of local farmers at risk.
