A 41-year-old man, Mark Shannon Munthali, a senior official at Kingfisher Insurance Company in Lilongwe, has been confirmed missing after allegedly throwing himself into the Shire River earlier today in Neno District.
According to Neno Police spokesperson Rebecca Msoliza, Munthali, who hails from Ngosi Village under Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga, reportedly abandoned his Toyota Axio (registration number BX6396) at a nearby shop before walking toward the Shire Bridge, where he jumped into the river.
Police say Munthali had earlier stopped at a bar near Zalewa Roadblock, handed over the car keys to someone, and informed them that another person would come to collect the vehicle. His wallet, containing identification documents, was found inside the vehicle.
Authorities have since launched a search operation to retrieve his body. While the reasons behind his actions remain unknown, police have confirmed the incident and are continuing investigations.
Members of the public with relevant information are encouraged to report to the nearest police station, particularly at Zalewa or Neno, to support the ongoing efforts.
