Breaking News: Chakwera Announces Vitumbiko Mumba As His Running mate

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader and State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has picked Vitumbiko Mumba as his running mate in the upcoming September 16, 2025 presidential election.
Mumba, who hails from Mzimba District, is currently serving as Minister of Trade and Industry. He is also contesting as an independent parliamentary candidate in Mzimba Central.
He is running independently after the court nullified the results of the MCP primary elections in the area, ruling that the party failed to follow proper procedures in declaring that Mumba had lost the primaries.
The announcement comes on the same day that President Chakwera submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), formally expressing his intent to seek re-election.
