Malawian-born women’s football sensation, Chioma Okafor, has been honoured alongside her teammates from the Nigeria Women’s National Football Team with a $100,000 (approximately K173.6 million) reward and a three-bedroom apartment each, following their victory at the just-ended Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The announcement was made by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also conferred on each of the 24 players the prestigious national honour of the Order of Niger in recognition of their outstanding achievement and contribution to national pride.
Okafor, born at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, to a Malawian mother, Patricia, and a Nigerian father, Ferdinand, had previously been linked with a potential call-up to Malawi’s national team, the Scorchers. However, the Nigerian Football Association moved swiftly to secure her allegiance to her fatherland.
The 22-year-old forward, who currently plays for the University of Connecticut in the United States, played a key role in Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign, further cementing her place as one of the rising stars in African women’s football.
This generous recognition not only reflects Nigeria’s commitment to supporting women in sports but also marks a defining moment for Okafor, whose dual heritage has drawn attention in both Malawi and Nigeria.
