Police in Lilongwe have today destroyed 733 firearms as part of the country’s annual commemoration of the International Gun Destruction Day, observed globally on 7th July.

The destroyed weapons included 31 pistols, 21 shotguns, 33 AK-47 rifles, and 640 locally-made guns, most of which were confiscated from individuals involved in criminal activities.

Speaking during the event, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ackis Muwanga, said the initiative is part of Malawi Police Service’s broader efforts to promote peace and reduce the circulation of illegal firearms.

“We are committed to educating the public on the dangers of illegal firearms. These weapons pose a serious threat to national security and the safety of our communities,” said Muwanga.

The event, which takes place annually, serves as a reminder of the importance of gun control and the role that law enforcement plays in maintaining peace and public safety across the country.
