The Media Institute of Southern Africa – Malawi Chapter (MISA Malawi) has condemned some supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for allegedly intimidating and obstructing journalists during President Lazarus Chakwera’s nomination presentation to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga, the media rights body said the supporters disrupted journalists who were trying to ask questions to President Chakwera. It further noted that Robert Edward, a video journalist from Luntha TV, had to be rescued by well-wishers after some individuals attempted to harass him.

Matonga has called on the MCP and all political parties to respect media freedom and ensure journalists can operate freely and safely, especially during the electoral period leading up to the September 16 presidential election.

“MISA Malawi urges political leaders and party supporters to create an environment that promotes press freedom. The media plays a crucial role in informing the public and strengthening democracy,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, MCP’s Deputy Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda declined to comment on the incident but maintained that the party respects media freedom.

This is the second incident of political supporters obstructing journalists in recent weeks. MISA Malawi also recently criticized some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) followers who reportedly interfered with media coverage during former president Peter Mutharika’s nomination presentation to MEC.

The organization has urged MEC and security agencies to ensure the protection of journalists throughout the election period.
