There was commotion in Parliament today after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament (MP) Sameer Suleman questioned the relevance of the ongoing sitting.

Suleman criticised the decision to amend electoral laws, arguing that Parliament should focus on addressing fuel and foreign exchange shortages.

He said the sitting was out of touch with the economic challenges facing Malawians. Suleman also questioned the legitimacy of Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara chairing the session.

He argued that the House should have elected a new Speaker after Parliament was dissolved on July 23. Suleman accused President Lazarus Chakwera of imposing leadership on Parliament.

In response, Speaker Gotani Hara said only the amendment of electoral laws would be discussed.

This decision angered some DPP MPs, who continued to oppose the proceedings.
