Parliament Reconvenes to Amend Elections Act for Special Voting

Parliament is sitting this morning to amend the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act to include provisions that would allow certain special groups to vote away from their registered centres.
The proposed amendment seeks to address a gap in the current law, which does not permit individuals to vote outside their registration centres. If passed, the amendment will enable specific groups, such as those on official duty during the election period, to cast their votes at locations where they are assigned to work.
President Lazarus Chakwera reconvened Parliament for this purpose following its dissolution on July 23. Despite the ongoing campaign period, the House is nearly full.
The National Assembly is scheduled to begin deliberations at 9:30 a.m. As of 9 a.m., lawmakers had not yet arrived in the chamber.
