The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has suspended fuel allocation to SIMSO Oil and Transport Company after the company was found hoarding over 200,000 litres of petrol at its depot while its service stations remained dry.
According to a statement released by MERA, the decision follows regulatory inspections carried out on 6 August 2025 at oil depots in Lilongwe. The inspections revealed that SIMSO was deliberately withholding petrol without any justifiable reason during a time when Malawi is facing a national fuel crisis.
MERA stated that such conduct by SIMSO undermines government and industry efforts to stabilize the fuel supply across the country. The company has now been ordered to immediately release and distribute the withheld fuel to its service stations.
In a strong directive, MERA has further instructed fuel importers and Oil Marketing Companies not to allocate any fuel stocks to SIMSO until further notice.
in in septermber 2024 , MERA also closed Simso Filling Station in Area 25, Lilongwe, following complaints that the station was selling petrol mixed with water.
