A 77-year-old man from Thondwe in Zomba district is set to appear in court tomorrow, August 12, to answer charges of defiling an 11-year-old girl. Harry Mofolo, the accused, has been on police bail since July 1 this year while investigations were underway.

The victim’s parents reported that the alleged incident occurred when Mofolo invited the girl to his house to watch a movie. They expressed frustration over delays in the case, saying they were kept in the dark about court dates until recently.

Zomba Police Spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano confirmed the case details and assured the public that justice would be served. “We understand the family’s concerns, but the matter is now before the court where it will be properly handled,” Sipiliano stated.

The police spokesperson advised the girl’s family to remain calm as the judicial process takes its course. Child rights activists in the area have called for swift justice, emphasizing the need to protect minors from sexual violence.

This case comes amid growing concerns about child protection in Malawi, with recent statistics showing an increase in defilement cases reported to authorities. The court proceedings tomorrow will be closely watched by community members and child welfare organizations.

Authorities have reminded the public that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Meanwhile, counseling services have been provided to the young victim and her family as they await justice.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in Malawi’s justice system regarding timely handling of child abuse cases, particularly in rural areas where legal resources are often limited.
