As Malawi continues to grapple with persistent fuel shortages, police have uncovered a cross-border smuggling operation involving thousands of liters of petrol and diesel allegedly destined for Mozambique.

In Mozambique, petrol sells at 92.61 meticals (about K6,000) per liter, while diesel is 88.96 meticals, making the illegal trade highly lucrative.

According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, of the 5,400 liters recently seized in the district, 3,800 liters were allegedly being transported to Mozambique.

In Mulanje, police spokesperson Innocent Moses said eight suspects were arrested in a similar operation, with 4,830 liters confiscated before crossing the border.

Reacting to the development, social commentator Caesar Kondowe condemned the smugglers as “unpatriotic,” calling for tougher border security.

“Anyone caught and found guilty should face stiff punishment,” Kondowe said.

Police have vowed to intensify patrols to curb the illegal trade, which is worsening the country’s fuel crisis.
