The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has bluntly warned Vice President Dr Michael Usi to stop criticising the government or risk being investigated for alleged misconduct.
At a press briefing in Lilongwe, MCP spokesperson Dr Jessie Kabwira hit back at Usi’s recent remarks accusing some government officials of lacking integrity and diligence. She said Usi should be “grateful” for his position and cautioned him against continuing his public attacks.
“Usi should simply be grateful that he was chosen to be Vice President under President Chakwera. We can investigate him right now because the number of vehicles for his party has increased, yet this does not match his salary,” Kabwira said.
Kabwira added that President Chakwera appointed Usi to honour and respect the wishes of the late Vice President Saulos Chilima, who had personally chosen Usi as his deputy in the UTM Party.
“What we expected from him was gratitude, not turning around to attack the government by calling it corrupt,” she said, warning that political leaders must be mindful of the platform they stand on.
Usi has not yet publicly responded to the MCP’s statements.
