Lawrence Chaziya has been declared duly elected unopposed as Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Chilobwe Constituency.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate was the only contender to successfully submit nomination papers within the prescribed period.
According to a statement by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Chaziya met all the legal requirements to be declared the winner without a vote.
“In accordance with the electoral laws of Malawi, where there is only one validly nominated candidate, that candidate is duly declared elected unopposed,” the statement reads.
As a result, MEC will not hold parliamentary elections for the constituency on September 16. Chaziya will now assume office in line with the law governing unopposed parliamentary elections.
His unopposed election comes after no other candidate submitted valid nominations before the deadline. MEC has emphasized that this outcome is in full compliance with Malawi’s electoral regulations.
Chaziya’s confirmation adds to MCP’s representation in Parliament without the need for a competitive poll.
