A man named Beston Mkwanda was trampled to death by a stray elephant in Mzimba District.

The elephant had wandered from Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve and attacked Mkwanda while he was cutting grass.

The incident took place near Chiwangalala in the area of Group Village Headman Thomas Chisi.

Local reports indicate the elephant was part of a group of around 16 that broke through the reserve’s fence.

Residents say the elephants have been destroying crops in nearby communities without any response from game rangers.

Over 10,000 tomato seedlings, banana plants, and other crops have been damaged by the elephants.

Wildlife officials had previously driven the herd back into the reserve, but one elephant strayed again.

Authorities are monitoring the area closely and working to prevent further attacks.
