Police in Chitipa have arrested Tumpale Chihaule, an intern at the Chitipa District Council, for allegedly stealing gate revenue collected during a high-profile football match held at Chitipa Stadium.
The funds were generated from FDH Bank Cup round of 16 fixture between Chilumba Barracks FC and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, which grossed approximately K6.3 million.
Confirming the arrest, Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Rabson Mkandawire said investigations are underway, and further details will be released in due course.
Reacting to the development, Chilumba Barracks FC official Lehman Bwanausi expressed concern, calling the incident a major setback to the growth of football in the country.
“I am very concerned about what has happened. These are the kinds of challenges that continue to cripple football in Malawi,” said Bwanausi.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how much of the revenue is suspected to have been stolen or whether any of the funds have been recovered.
Police say Chihaule will be formally charged after investigations are concluded.
