Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) running mate Dr. Jane Ansah today paid tribute to the late former Vice-President Saulos Chilima by laying a wreath and offering prayers at the June 10, 2024 plane crash site at Nthungwa, Chikangawa, where Chilima and others tragically lost their lives.

Dr. Ansah, standing alongside senior DPP officials including deputy running mate Jappie Mhango, Governor Mzomera Ngwira, and party veteran Sameer Suleman, marked the solemn occasion before continuing her whistle-stop campaign tour across northern Malawi. Her itinerary includes stops at Manyamula, the headquarters of Paramount Chief M’mbelwa at Edingeni, Ingalaweni, Chiseng’ezi, Bulala, Mzalangwe, and Euthini.

The DPP’s public display of respect for Chilima, who died while serving as Vice-President and leader of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) after leaving the DPP, has sparked debate. Some observers have praised the gesture, while others expressed surprise at the party’s sudden expressions of affection toward Chilima, with one noting: “The speed at which DPP started saying they love Chilima after he died is quite impressive. I did not know love develops that fast.”

Dr. Ansah’s visit underscores the DPP campaign’s efforts to engage northern Malawi voters ahead of the 16 September parliamentary and presidential elections, while also paying homage to a political figure who played a key role in the country’s leadership.
