Police in Chitipa are holding a 37-year-old man, Imale Silumbu, from Mwamukono 2 Village under Senior Chief Mwenemisiku, for allegedly murdering his grandfather in the district.
According to Chitipa Police Deputy Spokesperson Rabson Mkandawire, the incident occurred on August 2, 2025, after the elderly man visited Silumbu’s home to purchase pine seedlings but did not find him. Later that evening, around 5:00 PM, the victim returned and was allowed to rest in the kitchen by Silumbu’s wife due to the late hour and the distance to his home.
Mkandawire stated that when Silumbu arrived home intoxicated, he became violent, demanding money from his wife, who fled for her safety. The next morning, she returned to find the grandfather’s body abandoned on a steep slope, while Silumbu had disappeared.
Police and medical personnel from Chitipa District Hospital later confirmed that the victim died from **severe head injuries and multiple rib fractures.
“Investigations led to Silumbu’s arrest, and during interrogation, he accused his grandfather of having an affair with his wife,” Mkandawire explained.
Silumbu remains in custody awaiting trial. This marks the second murder-related arrest in Chitipa within two days, raising concerns over violent crimes in the district.
