UDF Candidate’s Death Forces Election Suspension in Mzuzu’s Luwinga Ward

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended the local government election in Luwinga Ward, Mzuzu City North Constituency, following the death of United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Isaac Henry Singini.
In a notice released today, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja said all election proceedings in the ward have been voided in line with Section 49 of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act of 2023.
MEC further announced that the election will be restarted as a by-election once a vacancy is formally declared.
