The defilement case against popular actor Tumpe Mtaya, widely known as Phwedo, is set to continue today at the Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe.
His lawyer, Robert Kadzakumanja, confirmed the hearing, stating that the case will proceed as scheduled.
The development follows a ruling on July 31, where the court ordered the trial to begin after the State, despite delays, failed to present a crucial piece of evidence: the actual form the alleged underage girl used to register for her Form 4 examinations last year. This form is central to proving her age, a key element in a defilement case.
Today, the State is expected to finally begin presenting its witnesses against the filmmaker.
Phwedo is accused of repeatedly having sexual intercourse with an underage girl and grooming a child. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
