A one-year-and-two-month-old boy, Brian Kutchire, has died after a petrol-induced fire exploded inside his parents’ house in Mchinji District.
Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira confirmed the incident, which occurred on Wednesday around 11 a.m. while the child’s parents were transferring petrol into jerricans for storage inside their home.
During the process, some petrol spilled on the floor and ignited after coming into contact with a nearby mbaula (charcoal stove), sparking an explosion. The child, who was asleep in the bedroom, was burnt to ashes.
His parents, including mother Shalon Mdeseni, 24, managed to escape but sustained severe burns. They are currently receiving treatment at Mchinji District Hospital.
The value of property damaged in the fire has not yet been established.
