A cargo train carrying fuel from Nayuchi Border in Mozambique to Moazite Coal Mine in Mozambique derailed at Loop 8 of Kamwendo Railway Station in Machinga District.

Liwonde Police publicist Ngwashape Msume confirmed the incident, saying nine fuel tanks overturned, with four leaking diesel. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

According to Msume, the derailment occurred after the train’s operator, 33-year-old Innocent Halala, received a wrong directive from a switch point operator based in Nacala, Mozambique. The error diverted the train onto the wrong track, causing it to overturn.

On board were the operator, his assistant, and G4S officers escorting the cargo.
