Police in Mulanje have arrested three men for allegedly transporting 1,800 litres of petrol without a permit. The suspects have been identified as Laudon Wiki, 24, from Phalombe; Evance Chapweteka, 33, and Manuel Saulo, 22, both from Mulanje District.
According to Mulanje Police Spokesperson Innocent Moses, the arrests were made on 22 August at Likwethu Village after police intercepted a minibus carrying the illicit fuel. Investigations revealed that the petrol was loaded secretly at Meru Filling Station in Phalombe, where attendants reportedly switched off lights and used cones to conceal the activity.
The suspects allegedly attempted to use a back road to bypass a police checkpoint but were intercepted. Moses confirmed that police are still investigating the incident and searching for other individuals involved in the illegal fuel trade.
He further warned that anyone found transporting fuel without proper documentation will face legal action. The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
