The High Court in Lilongwe has dismissed an application by former Reserve Bank Governor and presidential candidate Dalitso Kabambe and his co-accused to adjourn their K13.6 billion loan fraud case.

The application sought a delay to allow Kabambe to campaign ahead of the September 16 General Elections.

Ruling on Friday, August 22, 2025, Justice Chimbigzani Kanthambi said the request lacked merit and would undermine equal treatment before the law.

Kabambe is being tried alongside Henry Mathanga, Leston Ted Mulli, Felton Mulli, Joseph Khupe, Mulli Brothers Limited, and Web Commercials Limited.

They are accused of facilitating unpaid loans for the purchase of Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) fertilizer, which was never delivered.

Director of Public Prosecutions Masauko Chamkakala welcomed the ruling, saying political ambitions cannot delay justice.

The State argued Kabambe’s presence is not essential at this stage since he is legally represented and can still run for office.

This ruling comes just a week after another court allowed former President Peter Mutharika to postpone his appearance in the Cement Gate case until after the elections.
