Police in Mwanza District have remanded 46-year-old Maxwell Chipinde in custody on suspicion of defrauding his employer of over 7 million Kwacha.
According to Mwanza Deputy Police Spokesperson Ritta Mchecheta Nyirongo, Chipinde allegedly misled his employer by claiming that the money was needed to purchase electrical equipment.
However, suspecting discrepancies in the quoted amount, the employer visited the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) office to verify the actual prices. Upon discovering the inconsistency, the employer reported the matter to the police, leading to Chipinde’s arrest.
Maxwell Chipinde, who hails from Kunenekude Village, Traditional Authority Kanduku in Mwanza District, is expected to appear in court soon to face charges of embezzlement, contrary to Section 286, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
