A two-year-old boy, Allan Msukwa from Kamalambo area in Mzimba district, has tragically drowned after falling into a dam. The incident occurred on August 24, 2025, when Allan and his older brother, Sosten Msukwa (under 10 years old), went to fetch water from a nearby stream.
According to Jenda Police spokesperson Constable Precious Mzunga, the two boys had arrived at the stream when young Allan began playing near the water’s edge. He accidentally slipped and fell into the dam. His brother attempted to rescue him but was unable to pull him out of the water. He began screaming for help, catching the attention of passersby who rushed to assist.
By the time help arrived, however, Allan was already unconscious. He was pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital by police and medical personnel who were called to the scene. Medical examinations confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.
Police have urged parents and guardians to closely supervise young children, especially near bodies of water such as streams, dams, and rivers. They also reminded communities to take extra precautions during the rainy season when water levels are high and currents can be dangerous.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the hospital mortuary pending further investigations and funeral arrangements.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that open water sources pose to young children and the need for increased vigilance in rural communities where such risks are common.
