Deadly Overtake: Fatal Collision in Zambia Claims 1 Life, 4 Injured

The Zambia Police Service has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of today, August 27, 2025, around 02:00 hours at UNO Filling Station along the Great East Road in Chongwe.

The accident involved a Volvo truck, registration number ABX 4403, which was loaded with charcoal and traveling from the eastern direction. The truck, driven by Tebson Mujulu, who fled the scene after the crash, was extensively damaged. Four male passengers on board sustained various injuries and were rushed to Chongwe District Hospital for treatment. The injured include:

Bright Mweetwa (32)  complained of pains in the right leg, left hand, and shoulders.

Lewis Siakalampisia (27) sustained injuries to his left leg and right hand.

Luckson Sialenga (25)  suffered a cut on the head and general body pains.

Francis Sakala (30)  complained of a painful left leg and left shoulder.

Also involved in the collision was a GWM van, registration number ABL 289, driven by Gilbert Mudenda (31) of Waterfalls area. He was trapped in the vehicle, retrieved, and rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The van was extensively damaged, and a price list pillar belonging to UNO Filling Station was also destroyed in the accident.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the accident occurred when the Volvo truck driver attempted to overtake improperly, colliding with the GWM van, which was in the process of turning right.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery. He further urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and improper overtaking, stressing the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to save lives and protect property.
