Fisherman drowns in Lake Malawi in Nkhata Bay

A-29-year old fisherman identified as Jacob Kondowe who hailed from Chibwana village in the area of Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhata bay District has drowned in the waters of lake Malawi.

It is reported that on August 26, 2025 at around 12:00 hours, Kondowe (now deceased)and his two friends went to Sanga fishing camp to anchor their boat.

Whilst there, the three started swimming. In the process, Kondowe went into the deep waters and drowned.

His friends tried to rescue him and took him to Nkhata bay district hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.

The incident was later reported to Nkhata bay police station and the scene was visited by Police in accompany with medical personnel.

Postmortem results has traveled that the death was caused by suffocation secondary to drowning.

Police in the district are advising members of the community especially fishermen to avoid going into the waters of lake Malawi without life jackets to avoid similar deaths.
