One person has died and four others have been seriously injured after a goods truck they were travelling on overturned yesterday at Kanduli in Nkhata Bay district.
Nkhata Bay Police Traffic Officer Jimmy Kanzangaza identified the vehicle as a Hino truck, registration number NB 5954, which was carrying 14 passengers on top of its cargo.
“Following the accident, one person died, four were seriously injured and have been admitted to the district hospital, while the others sustained minor injuries,” Kanzangaza said.
The police officer used the incident to warn small-scale traders against using goods vehicles as passenger transport. He urged business operators to arrange proper transportation with truck owners instead of risking their lives by riding on top of goods.
Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident, which adds to growing concerns about road safety and overcrowding on goods vehicles in the region.
Authorities have reiterated calls for passengers to use designated public transport and for drivers to adhere to vehicle capacity regulations to prevent further tragedies.
