A newly constructed bridge at Kamilangombe in Nthalire, Chitipa, collapsed on Saturday when a People’s Party Land Cruiser attempted to cross, sparking public concern over the quality of infrastructure projects in the district.

The bridge, which had just been completed but was yet to be officially opened, gave way as the vehicle became the first to use it.

Chitipa District Council’s Director of Economic Planning and Development, Philimon Maseko, confirmed the development, saying the council had already rejected the project due to poor workmanship.

“We already found the bridge to be substandard and disqualified it. If warning signs had been placed to indicate it was impassable, this incident could have been avoided,” said Maseko.

The Land Cruiser was reportedly being used for campaign activities in Nthalire ahead of the September 16 elections.

The bridge was built under the Rural Roads and Water Infrastructure Programme by Wotazs Group Construction at a cost of K167 million.
